Halophytes potential feedstock for cellulosic ethanol in Pakistan

Green Car Congress

Halophytic perennial grasses that thrive in saline areas could serve as a viable source for ligno-cellulosic feedstock for cellulosic ethanol as well and help reclaim vast stretches of unproductive land in Pakistan, according to a new study published in the Journal of Biomass and Bioenergy. “They could also help reduce carbon dioxide emissions by absorbing carbon dioxide to make food.” SciDev.

Global CO2 emissions stalled for the third year in a row

Green Car Congress

The annual assessment of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by the JRC and the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (PBL) confirms that CO 2 emissions have stalled for the third year in a row. Global GHG emissions continue to be dominated by fossil carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions, which however show a slowdown trend since 2012, and were stalled for the third year in a row in 2016. Also in Eurasia emissions grew in Turkey (5%) and Ukraine (8%).

New phase of globalization could undermine efforts to reduce CO2 emissions

Green Car Congress

A new study finds that the growth of carbon production from Chinese exports has slowed or reversed, reflecting a “new phase of globalization” between developing countries that could undermine international efforts to reduce emissions. The study, involving researchers from the University of East Anglia (UEA) and colleagues in China and the United States, investigated how complex supply chains are distributing energy-intensive industries and their CO 2 emissions throughout the global South.

IEA finds CO2 emissions flat for third straight year even as global economy grew in 2016

Green Car Congress

Global energy-related carbon dioxide emissions were flat for a third straight year in 2016 even as the global economy grew, according to the International Energy Agency. The data signal a continuing decoupling of emissions and economic activity. Global emissions from the energy sector stood at 32.1 The biggest drop came from the United States, where carbon dioxide emissions fell 3%, or 160 million tonnes, while the economy grew by 1.6%.

International study identifies 14 key measures to reduce methane and black carbon emissions; reduction in projected global mean warming of ~0.5 °C by 2050

Green Car Congress

A study by an international team of researchers, led by Drew Shindell of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) in New York City, has identified 14 measures targeting methane and black carbon (BC) emissions that could reduce projected global mean warming ~0.5°C The team considered about 400 emission control measures to reduce these pollutants by using current technology and experience. All emissions control measures are assumed to improve air quality.

GSMA study indicates Bangkok could gain US$1B per year in benefits through ITS; reduced travel time, CO2 emissions and accidents

Green Car Congress

In addition, CO 2 emissions contributed by road traffic could be reduced by 10-20%, or 3 to 5 million metric tonnes per year. GSMA estimates that reductions in travel time, CO 2 emissions and road accidents through ITS could result in economic benefits worth up to $1 billion per year for Bangkok alone. The country features in the bottom 10 countries in Asia in terms of per-capita CO 2 emissions from transportation and has the highest road accident death rate in the region.

In general, high scorers exhibit long-standing commitments to protecting public health, preserving natural resources, and decoupling greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from economic activity. Low scores on the EPI are indicative of the need for national sustainability efforts on a number of fronts, especially cleaning up air quality, protecting biodiversity, and reducing GHG emissions, said the researchers. Surge in natural gas vehicles predicted

Green Cars News

Currently, the top five markets for natural gas vehicles are Pakistan, Argentina, Iran, India and Brazil with Pike Research anticipating that India will be the fastest growing market at a rate of 18.4 This will be largely due to the availability of refuelling stations as well as the expansion of government emission rules in large Indian cities.

The eighth edition of UN Environment’s Emissions Gap report, released ahead of the UN Climate Change Conference in Bonn, finds that national pledges only bring approximately one-third of the reduction in emissions required by 2030 to meet climate targets, with private sector and sub-national action not increasing at a rate that would help close this gap. The aerosol buildup creates formations known as atmospheric brown clouds (ABCs) in which smog from diesel emissions, soot and other by-products of biomass burning accumulate and become widespread to a degree significant enough to affect regional climate. This underscores the importance of getting a handle on emissions in the region. Cyclone Phet in 2010 struck the coastlines of Pakistan and Oman and caused nearly $2 billion in damage. IEA working paper highlights potential role of natural gas in reducing global road transport CO2

Green Car Congress

A new working paper published by the International Energy Agency (IEA) concludes that natural gas can play a significant role in cutting on-road vehicle carbon dioxide emissions, but that over the long term there will need to be a commitment to transition to very low CO 2. Natural gas may be especially important for cutting CO 2 emissions from heavy-duty vehicles (HDVs) since other options such as electrification appear to be limited, the paper, written by Michiel Nijboer, notes.
