The calculated relative amounts of well-to-wheels emissions of greenhouse gases from eight different energy sources are shown in the table below. These results indicate that coal and oil are the energy sources leading to most emissions, and that hydro, wind, and nuclear are the energy sources leading to least emissions.

Despite the economic effects of the global financial crisis (GFC), carbon dioxide emissions from human activities rose 2% in 2008 to an all-time high of 1.3 Other main findings of the study include: CO 2 emissions from the burning of fossil fuels have increased at an average annual rate of 3.4% over the previous seven years.

EPA has implemented standards that require diesel engines to be more than 90% cleaner, but many older diesel school buses remain in operation and predate these standards. Since 2008, the DERA program has funded mor than 500 clean diesel projects across the country. These projects have reduced emissions for more than 50,000 engines.
