U Chicago, MIT study suggests ongoing use of fossil fuels absent new carbon taxes

A paper by a team from the University of Chicago and MIT suggests that technology-driven cost reductions in fossil fuels will lead to the continued use of fossil fuels—oil, gas, and coal—unless governments pass new taxes on carbon emissions. We need both a policy like a carbon tax and to put more R&D money into renewables.

Australia PM Gillard announces carbon pricing plan; transport fuels exempt, but lowered fuel tax credits to bring carbon price to some businesses

Australia’s per capita CO 2 emissions are higher than those of the US due to an emissions-intensive energy sector. For the first three years, the carbon price will be fixed, before moving to an emissions trading scheme in 2015. Gillard said that by 2020, this would cut emissions by some 160 million tonnes per year.

BC government unveils climate plan

The government of British Columbia recently unveiled its Climate Leadership Plan , targeting the reduction of net annual greenhouse gas emissions by up to 25 million tonnes below current forecasts by 2050 and the creation of up to 66,000 jobs over the next ten years. BC’s target is to reduce 2050 emissions 80% below 2007 levels.

Maersk Line Reports Historic $1.3B Loss, Seeks to Cut CO2 Emissions 20% per Container

Maersk also announced that it would set a target of reducing CO 2 emissions by 20% per container shipped in 2017, as compared to 2007. Maersk will now focus on “backhaul” routes, shipping empty containers back to manufacturing regions, in addition to the more profitable “fronthaul” routes.
