CARB releases results of multi-year E15 study; multiple air quality benefits with slight reduction in fuel economy

Green Car Congress

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) has released the results of a multiyear study evaluating exhaust emissions from the use of California Reformulated Gasoline (CaRFG) that contains 15 volume percent ethanol (E15). California currently limits the ethanol content of gasoline to 10 percent.

the E30 and E78—led to statistically significant reductions of 9%–13% for total hydrocarbon (THC); 13%–44% for non-methane hydrocarbon (NMHC); 20%–35% for carbon monoxide (CO); and 17%–36% for nitrogen oxides (NO x ) emissions compared to the high-aromatics E10 fuel. Their paper is published in the ACS journal Energy & Fuels.

Study: consumer products overtake transportation as largest source of VOCs air pollution in cities

Green Car Congress

The green symbol and dashed arrow illustrate the large reductions in tailpipe VOC emission factors as precatalyst on-road gasoline vehicles were replaced by present-day vehicle fleets. Even so, lotions, paints and other products contribute about as much to air pollution as does the transportation sector. McDonald et al.

UK researchers report that alcohols in windshield washer fluid are major unreported source of VOCs emissions from cars, including EVs

Green Car Congress

There are widespread policy assumptions that the phase-out of gasoline and diesel internal combustion engines will over time lead to much reduced emissions of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) from road transport and related fuels. Cliff et al. While some VOCs are released in exhaust, others may arise from an unexpected source—e.g.,

Study links PM2.5 pollution to heart damage

Green Car Congress

pollution to heart damage. are diesel and gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines ( earlier post ). People who were highly educated were less likely to have harmful effects on the heart from pollution. This could be due to a number of factors including better housing and workplace conditions, which reduce pollution exposure.

UCLA researchers find potential link between traffic pollution and some rare childhood cancers

Green Car Congress

Scientists from UCLA’s Fielding School of Public Health have found a possible link between exposure to traffic-related air pollution and several rare childhood cancers. Pollution exposure was estimated for the area around each child’s home for each trimester of their mother’s pregnancy and during their first year of life.
