EIA: CO2 emissions from US power sector have declined 28% since 2005

US electric power sector CO 2 emissions have declined 28% since 2005 because of slower electricity demand growth and changes in the mix of fuels used to generate electricity, according to the US Energy Information Administration (EIA). EIA calculated that CO 2 emissions from the electric power sector totaled 1,744 million metric tons (MMmt) in 2017, the lowest level since 1987. Brown Jr. today signed executive order B-18-18, directing all State entities to work with the private sector and all appropriate levels of government to put at least 5 million zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs) on California roads by 2030. Brown had mentioned the 5-million target in his State of the State address earlier this week. Earlier post.) The state’s current target, set by Brown in 2012, is 1.5 million ZEVs by 2025.

Hyundai delivers first 2019 NEXO fuel cell SUV to US customer

Hyundai delivered its first NEXO fuel cell SUV ( earlier post ) to Tom Hochrad of Ventura, California—the first US customer to drive off in the new NEXO, the only mass-produced fuel cell SUV for the US market, featuring a range up to 380 miles. Hochrad purchased his first hybrid car more than 15 years ago, and over the years has driven dedicated electric vehicles as well. His new NEXO will deliver about five times the driving range of his first all-electric car.

T&E: Electric bus orders in Europe more than doubled to 1,031 units in 2017; ~9% share of new registrations

The number of battery-electric buses ordered in Europe more than doubled in 2017 compared to 2016, reaching 1,031 vehicles, according to a new analysis by environmental NGO Transport & Environment. T&E estimates this to be equivalent to around 9% market share of new registrations in 2018. The are currently about 1,600 electric buses are on European roads, with another 1,600 on order (as of mid-2018).

Yutong Bus to deliver 100 electric buses to Chile

Zhengzhou Yutong Bus Co., will deliver 100 full electric buses to Chile. Having sent more than 20,000 vehicles to Latin America over the past 15 years, Yutong has become the leading Chinese bus supplier on the continent. The 100 full electric buses will be used by Buses Vule and STP Santiago to serve the Santiago public transportation system.

SunLine Transit puts new long-range fuel-cell range extended electric bus into service

California’s SunLine Transit Agency has put into service a new zero-emission bus that will have the capability to cover any route in its service territory—even with the air conditioner operating at maximum levels in the middle of the summer. With funding from the private sector, the Federal Transit Administration, and the California Energy Commission, SunLine Transit unveiled an electric bus with a fuel cell range extender to support a 250-300-mile daily route.

King County Metro to begin testing electric buses that can travel more than 140 miles on a single charge

King County Metro, the public transit authority of King County, Washington, which includes the city of Seattle, will soon begin testing long-range battery-powered buses that can travel more than 140 miles on a single charge, the latest milestone toward a zero-emission fleet. The latest models can travel nearly six times farther than the fast-charge buses Metro currently has in its fleet.

New study finds gasoline stations vent up to 10x more benzene fumes than previously thought

A study led by environmental health scientists at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health examined the release of vapors from gasoline station vent pipes, and found benzene emissions were 10 times higher than estimates used in setback regulations that determine how close schools, playgrounds, and parks can be to the facilities. ORNL demonstrates 120 kW wireless charging for vehicles; 97% efficiency

Researchers at the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) have demonstrated a 120-kilowatt wireless charging system for vehicles—providing six times the power of previous ORNL technology and a big step toward charging times that rival the speed and convenience of a gasoline station fill-up. The wireless system transfers 120 kilowatts of power with 97% efficiency, which is comparable to conventional, wired high-power fast chargers.

Porsche commissions MAN electric eTruck for green logistics at Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen

Porsche has commissioned a fully electric MAN eTGM ( earlier post ) for logistics operations at its Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen site. The truck is the first vehicle of this kind that has gone into series production in Germany. Both Porsche and MAN are members of the Volkswagen Group. The electric 32-tonne truck will soon enhance the commercial vehicle fleet that Porsche uses for its production logistics in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen.

CARB approves ICT regulation; 100% zero-emission bus fleets by 2040; ZEB tech symposium in Feb 2019

The California Air Resources Board on Friday approved the Innovative Clean Transit regulation (ICT) ( earlier post )—a first-of-its-kind regulation in the US that sets a statewide goal for public transit agencies to gradually transition to 100% zero-emission bus (ZEB) fleets by 2040. The ICT is part of a statewide effort to reduce emissions from the transportation sector, which accounts for 40% of greenhouse gas emissions and 80-90% of smog-forming pollutants.

Study links air pollution to increased emergency department visits for heart and lung disease

Volkswagen previewing mobile quick charging station; trials in 2019, production in 2020

Volkswagen is previewing the company’s future mobile quick charging station. The first mobile quick charging stations will be set up as early as the first half of 2019 in Wolfsburg as part of a pilot project, and will support the expansion of a charging infrastructure in the urban area. The mobile charging column is based on the battery pack of the Volkswagen Group’s Modular Electric Toolkit (MEB).

DOE, General Motors and MathWorks launch EcoCAR Mobility Challenge

The US Department of Energy (DOE), General Motors and MathWorks launched the EcoCAR Mobility Challenge, the latest DOE-sponsored Advanced Vehicle Technology Competition ( AVTC ), revealed the 12 competing universities and named the Chevrolet Blazer as the vehicle platform selected for the competition. The headline sponsors are the US Department of Energy, General Motors, and MathWorks, and the challenge is managed by Argonne National Laboratory.

Kia and Hyundai to introduce solar roof charging on selected vehicles: HEV, BEV and ICE

Exeter team develops low-cost photoelectrode for spontaneous water-splitting using sunlight

Researchers at the University of Exeter (UK) have developed a novel p-type LaFeO 3 photoelectrode using an inexpensive and scalable spray pyrolysis method. The nanostructured photoelectrode results in spontaneous hydrogen evolution from water without any external bias applied with a faradaic efficiency of 30% and excellent stability. The researchers believe this new type of photoelectrode is not only cheap to produce, but can also be recreated on a larger scale for mass and worldwide use.

Infineon introduces first Trusted Platform Module specifically for automotive cybersecurity

Infineon Technologies AG is the first semiconductor manufacturer to put a Trusted Platform Module (TPM) specifically for automotive applications on the market. The new OPTIGA TPM 2.0 protects communication between the car manufacturer and the car—which is increasingly turning into a computer on wheels. A number of car manufacturers have already designed in Infineon’s OPTIGA TPM. The TPM is a hardware-based security solution that has proven its worth in IT security.

MAN exhibiting eTGE 4.140 electric van at IAA 2018; production starts in July 2019

The battery-electric MAN eTGE 4.140 van is celebrating its world première at the IAA 2018 Commercial Vehicles in Hanover. The MAN plant in Wrze?nia nia will start production in July 2019. With a range of around 160 kilometers and a payload of 1 t–1.75 t (depending on type approval), it is targeted for last mile logistics applications. Seventy percent of lightweight commercial vehicles used in urban areas average less than 100 kilometers a day. The average speed reached is low.

Fastcharge consortium presents prototype for 450 kW charging station; Porsche research vehicle charges at 400 kW

In Germany, the FastCharge research consortium ( earlier post ) has presented a prototype for a charging station with an output of up to 450 kW in Jettingen-Scheppach, located near the A8 motorway between Ulm and Augsburg. The new charging station is suitable for electric models of all brands with the European standard Type 2 variant of the widely used Combined Charging System (CCS), and is now available for use free of charge.

Revolve Technologies shows new PCB-based fuel cell range extender

Berkeley-led team uses MOFs to set new record for hydrogen storage capacity

Mercedes begins sales of new 6-cylinder GLE diesel; first SUV in its class to meet Euro 6d

Mercedes-Benz has begun sales of two diesel models of the new GLE SUV which already comply with the coming Euro 6d emissions standard. Delivery of the first vehicles begins in spring of 2019. The OM 656 six-cylinder diesel engine comes with 243 kW (330 hp) and 700 N·m of torque in the GLE 400 d 4MATIC (combined fuel consumption: 7.5-7.0 l/100 km; combined CO 2 emissions: 199-184 g/km) and costs €76,100.50.

Nikola Motor introduces Nikola Tre heavy-duty hydrogen-electric truck for Europe
