Sandia National Laboratories researchers recently delivered electricity produced by a new power-generating system to the Sandia-Kirtland Air Force Base electrical grid. Because so much energy is lost turning steam back into water in the Rankine cycle, at most a third of the power in the steam can be converted into electricity.

Researchers at WMG, University of Warwick, have repurposed end-of-life electric vehicle batteries as small energy storage systems (ESS) for off-grid locations in developing countries or isolated communities. All parts were either sourced from the JLR service department or were low cost components purchased from any electrical retailer.

They wanted to see whether an electric vehicle could feed electricity back to the grid. The company’s president, Tom Gage , dubbed the system “vehicle to grid” or V2G. And EV owners would become entrepreneurs, selling electricity back to the grid. And indeed, that’s how promoters of vehicle-to-grid technology perceive the EV.

In addition to reinjecting electricity into the power grid, the bidirectional charger supports a vehicle-to-load (V2L) function for powering electrical appliances directly from the car. The platform has taken 70% of the parts featured on the CMF-B platform used for Clio and Captur.
