Sandia team puts power into local grid with supercritical CO2 closed-loop Brayton-cycle turbine

Green Car Congress

Sandia National Laboratories researchers recently delivered electricity produced by a new power-generating system to the Sandia-Kirtland Air Force Base electrical grid. In comparison, the Brayton cycle has a theoretical conversion efficiency upwards of 50%. It took us a long time to get the data needed to let us connect to the grid.

EU Innovation Fund grants €108M to RWE’s waste-to-hydrogen project FUREC

Green Car Congress

For comparison: This is equivalent to the output of a 700-megawatt offshore wind farm with coupled electrolyzers. The CO 2 released during the hydrogen production is captured and can be stored or possibly used as a raw material by industry in the future. The plant is expected to produce 54,000 tonnes of hydrogen per year.

The EV Transition Explained: Can the Grid Cope?

Cars That Think

There have been vigorous debates pro and con in the United States and elsewhere over whether electric grids can support EVs at scale. In comparison, the state’s goal is to achieve this amount by 2050. The answer is a nuanced “perhaps.” trillion in capital, operations, and maintenance costs by 2035. million miles of power lines.

The system worked as planned, so much so that we will go into trial operation in the very near future ahead of final commissioning at the start of 2014. —Michael Riechel, Member of the Board of Thüga AG. By the end of 2016, the partners will have gained experience of how the system works under real-world conditions.

Cornell team suggests engineered bacteria could address current limitations of energy storage technologies

Green Car Congress

Raising the penetration of renewable —an intermittent—sources of energy into the grid will require large scale electrical energy storage and retrieval. We are suggesting a new approach where we stitch together biological and non-biological electrochemical engineering to create a new method to store energy.

Stanford team develops sodium-ion battery with performance equivalent to Li-ion, but at much lower cost

Green Car Congress

Stanford researchers have developed a sodium-ion battery (SIB) that can store the same amount of energy as a state-of-the-art lithium ion, at substantially lower cost. In addition, material sustainability is also a critical factor when considering the total economic and environmental benefits for grid-scale energy storage applications.

Fossil Fuels Renewable Energy and EV Modern Life

A critical issue in decarbonization will also be the role of the electrical grid itself. We need off-grid and on-grid solutions. That is the only comparison that matters. Electric motors will eventually power large trucks and we should see some form of renewable energy powering air travel in the future.
