billion miles to be driven by UK cars. Last month, the Committee on Climate Change published a report— Net Zero: The UK’s Contribution to Stopping Global Warming —which concluded that “net zero is necessary, feasible and cost effective.” A 20% increase in UK-generated electricity would be required to charge the current 252.5

BMW i Ventures invests in GenXComm to increase speed and lower cost of 5G rollout; microphotonics-based full-duplex, high-speed communication

Green Car Congress

Autonomous systems, like self-driving cars, are essentially datacenters on wheels, and require fast, low latency connections. This is computationally intensive, increasing system size and resource utilization. This secondary processing is significantly less resource intensive than traditional digital-only cancellation approaches.

Study finds air pollution and GHG costs of crude-by-rail nearly 2x pipeline costs; much larger than spill and accidents costs

Green Car Congress

Researchers from Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh have found that the air pollution and greenhouse gas costs of shipping crude by rail are nearly twice as large as those for oil pipelines. The issue of the relative costs of moving these products by rail and pipelines extends to those products as well.

California Governor orders all new cars and passenger trucks sold in California be ZEVS by 2035; medium-and heavy duty trucks by 2045

Green Car Congress

Following the order, the California Air Resources Board (ARB) will develop regulations to mandate that 100% of in-state sales of new passenger cars and trucks are zero-emission by 2035—a target which would achieve more than a 35% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and an 80% improvement in NO x emissions from cars statewide.

Study finds technology cost of achieving European 2020 LDV CO2 targets more than offset by resultant fuel savings

Green Car Congress

A report published by Cambridge Econometrics and Ricardo-AEA concludes that overall, the cost of technologies required to meet proposed European 2020 CO 2 regulations for vehicles (95 g/km for cars and 147 g/km for vans) will be more than offset by the resultant fuel savings. Electric Cars & Costs to the Grid

Green Energy Consumers

As more and more people switch from gas-powered cars to electric vehicles (EVs), we hear a lot of questions along the lines of “can the grid handle it?” will we have enough clean energy resources to supply all the kilowatt-hours of electricity those EVs will need?), Sometimes that question is about supply and emissions (i.e.

TU Dresden study on external costs of automotive transportation in Europe calls for internalization of the high external costs; raising user prices to change behavior

Green Car Congress

Average external costs from cars per 1,000 vkm by country. The low estimate is external costs of €258 billion (US$341 billion). The study focused on the larger environmental costs of car traffic (plus accident costs not covered by insurance)—i.e., —“The True Costs of Automobility”.
