Affordable EVs seem to be a nut that no automaker can crack, as every promise of a “sub-$30,000” model or similar has fallen through in favor of higher prices. CEO Elon Musk has been beating the affordable EV drum for a while, telling investors in January that the car would enter production in Texas as soon as late 2025.

A shipment appearing to include structural battery packs was delivered at Tesla’s Gigafactory in Austin, Texas this week, though it’s not entirely clear what vehicle the deliveries are for. Interestingly, Tegtmeyer spotted the pallets at the Southwest receiving door of Giga Texas, where the company assembles the Cybertruck.

Tesla got a big win in Texas yesterday as the Lone Star State said it would require companies to include the automaker’s North American Charging Standard (NACS) connector in its electric vehicle charging stations if they want to be eligible for federal funding. According to a document seen by Reuters , a group of EV charging firms claims that Texas’ Tesla NACS mandate is premature. Washington State followed in Texas’ footsteps, requiring Tesla NACS compatibility.

Researchers from the Cockrell School of Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin have developed a cobalt-free high-energy lithium-ion battery, eliminating the cobalt and opening the door to reducing the costs of producing batteries while boosting performance in some ways. The findings appeared in the journal Advanced Materials.
