EPA: US greenhouse gases up 2% in 2013; increased coal consumption, cool winter

Green Car Congress

Total US greenhouse emissions were 6,673 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2013, an increase of 2% (127.9 billion gallons in 2001 to 1.4 MMT CO 2 Eq.) over the prior year, according to the EPA’s newly published Inventory of US Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Sinks: 1990–2013. Total US emissions have increased by 5.9%

California ARB: GHG emissions fell below 1990 levels for first time in 2016; down 13% from 2004 peak; transportation emissions up 2%

Green Car Congress

Senate Bill 32, signed in 2016, requires the state to go even further than AB 32 and cut greenhouse gas emissions 40% below 1990 levels by 2030—the most ambitious carbon goal in North America. They fell 23% from a peak of 14 metric tons per person (roughly equal to driving 34,000 miles) in 2001 to 10.8

EIA: US energy-related CO2 dropped 2.7% in 2015; of end-use sectors, only transportation increased

Green Car Congress

These factors included a decline in the carbon intensity of the energy supply (CO 2 /British thermal units [Btu]) of 1.8%; and a 3.4% Specific circumstances, such as the very warm fourth quarter of 2015 and relatively low natural gas prices, put downward pressure on emissions as natural gas was substituted for coal in electricity generation.

Study Finds Black Carbon a Significant Factor in Melting of Himalayan Glaciers

Green Car Congress

A team of researchers from the US and India has found that airborne black carbon aerosols, or soot, from India is a major contributor to the decline in snow and ice cover on the glaciers in the Himalayan mountains. Black carbon alone contributes at least 30% of this sum. Change in annual linear snow cover from 1990 to 2001.

US, Canada and Mexico release atlas mapping North American potential CO2 storage capacity; 500 years of geologic storage

Green Car Congress

The US Department of Energy (DOE), Natural Resources Canada and the Mexican Ministry of Energy have released the first-ever atlas mapping the potential carbon dioxide storage capacity in North America. CCUS technologies help to capture, purify and compress carbon dioxide, which is injected into geological formations for permanent storage.
