EPA draft findings of Pavillion, Wyoming ground water investigation indicate water contamination likely associated with fracking; open for public comment and independent scientific review

Green Car Congress

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released a draft analysis of data from its Pavillion, Wyoming ground water investigation, indicating that ground water in the aquifer contains compounds likely associated with gas production practices, including hydraulic fracturing. In the report, EPA notes that water wells in the area overlie the Pavillion gas field, which has 169 production wells extracting gas from the lower Wind River Formation and underlying Fort Union Formation.

PNNL study finds that PHEVs and BEVs could serve as feasible resource to offset grid imbalances caused by integration of large amounts of intermittent wind generation

Green Car Congress

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) or battery electric vehicles (BEVs) have the potential to serve as a resource—under certain market scenarios and penetration levels—to meet the significant energy imbalances on the power grid that can be created by the integration of large amounts of wind generation (which can be highly variable), according to a new report by researchers from the US Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL).

NREL study suggests cost gap for Western renewables could narrow by 2025

Green Car Congress

A new Energy Department study conducted by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) indicates that by 2025 wind and solar power electricity generation could become cost-competitive without federal subsidies, if new renewable energy development occurs in the most productive locations. According to the analysis, by 2025 geothermal generation could on average be 12% to 35% higher than CCCGT baseline; solar 1-19% higher; and wind at parity up to 13% higher.
