In the wake of the Chevy Volt presentation by GM, my "plug-in hybrid" google alert has filled my inbox with reports from other automakers about their PHEV projects. The buzz about the Volt has generated automaker PR reactions. You can't keep such a good idea as plug-in hybrids down, but it can be delayed.

In my own neighborhood I see several EV drivers with long cables from Level 2 chargers in the garage, and extension cords presumably from a 120 Volt outlet. Shell Recharge has plans to operate 500,000 charge points by 2025 , but it is unclear how many of these will be at Shell retail locations in the US. Let me know.

Witha 60-mile range, most felt the need to recharge after 30 miles or so. E-Flex is technically a hybrid with two power units, but unlike the ToyotaPrius, Honda Insight and various Lexus models, the engine in the Volt doesnot drive the wheels, it simply acts as an emergency generator to rechargethe batteries.
