I thought I would take the afternoon to see if I could draw some battery boxes with Google Sketchup. Here are some tentative 3/16" polypropylene battery boxes for the Civic-EV design: This is the front (headlight) battery box that holds four batteries. I was surprised by how easy the program was to use.

OpenXC is an open-source platform developed by Ford for research applications, and consists of a software and hardware development kit that enables access to a wide array of vehicle data that may be used as inputs to apps. The vertical infotainment screen looks good, though the learning curve for its use is a bit steep, especially if you aren’t steeped in the Google ecosystem. The clean design can’t help but make me think of stereotypes about Swedish design and minimalism. A 20-inch-wheel kit replaced the 19s and cost $3,200.

It seems like this will be good enough as long as all the designs have the Open Hardware License (OHL) identification on them. The next hurdle was finding free tools with which to design various parts with. The software is free from Google and it runs on both Microsoft and Macintosh operating systems. Cheers, Tim.
