Wind-to-Hydrogen Tech Goes to Sea

Cars That Think

Wind and solar parks produce a large portion of their energy. Then, as now, wind farms are operating off the world’s coasts—but not all of these offshore sites are connected to the mainland via underwater power cables. Some of the wind farms instead sit in clusters more than 100 kilometers out at sea.

This startup is about to install bladeless rooftop wind turbines on box buildings

Baua Electric

Aeromine Technologies just closed a $9 million funding round, and it’s ready to scale up production of its bladeless rooftop wind turbines. Aeromine, launched in 2022, makes compact 50 kW or larger “wind harvesting platforms” that it mounts on the edge of a building’s roof. Onsite power generation eliminates grid supply disruptions.

US DOE releases 2023 Critical Materials Assessment to evaluate supply chain security for clean energy technologies

Green Car Congress

Highlights of the findings from the 2023 CMA include: Rare earth materials (neodymium [Nd], praseodymium [Pr], dysprosium [Dy], and terbium [Tb]) used in magnets in EV motors and wind turbine generators continue to be critical. Electrical steel is near critical due to its use in transformers for the grid and electric motors in EVs.

German power-to-gas facility opens green methanation plant; €28M STORE&GO project

Green Car Congress

While the current facility feeds pure hydrogen (“WindGas”) directly into the gas grid, the new methanation plant provides for the generation of “green” methane. In this second stage, hydrogen from regenerative energy sources is converted into methane (CH 4 ), i.e. synthetic natural gas, using CO 2 from a bio-ethanol plant.

Baker Institute report: China has positioned itself as a gatekeeper to the energy transition; nickel case study

Green Car Congress

The global push to convert the world to electric vehicles will cause supply chain complexities that could undermine the alternative energy transition in the United States, according to a new report from Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy. This surge occurred mostly in China, driven by steel manufacturing.
