Volvo Cars? Chengdu car plant powered by 100% renewable electricity; 65% hydropower

The 100% renewable electricity mix in Chengdu is the result of a newly signed supply contract and will reduce the plant’s CO 2 emissions by more than 11,000 tonnes per year. Nel ASA receives purchase order for 20MW alkaline electrolyzer from steelmaker Ovako

The electrolyzer will be installed at Ovako’s existing plant in Hofors, Sweden. There is huge potential in reducing CO 2 -emissions from steel-heating processes through green hydrogen. The electrolyzer will produce oxygen and hydrogen for Ovako’s steel-heating process and is a major step towards zero-carbon emission steel production.

HYBRIT produces hydrogen-reduced sponge iron on pilot scale

The technological breakthrough within the HYBRIT ( earlier post ) initiative cuts about 90% of the emissions in connection with steel production and is a decisive step on the road to fossil-free steel. In a traditional process, this is done using carbon or coke, while in the HYBRIT process the reduction is done using fossil-free hydrogen.

Volvo Cars first carmaker to explore fossil-free steel with SSAB and HYBRIT

The result is expected to be fossil-free steelmaking technology, with virtually no carbon footprint. As part of the collaboration, Volvo Cars will be the first car maker to secure SSAB steel made from hydrogen-reduced iron from HYBRIT’s pilot plant in Luleå, Sweden. By 2040, Volvo Cars’ ambition is to be a climate-neutral company.

Volvo Trucks Begins Field Testing of LNG Diesel Trucks in Sweden

When trucks can operate on 80 percent pure biogas and 20 percent pure biodiesel, carbon emissions will be 80% lower than with conventional diesel technology.
