Charging forward! NIO takes battery swaps to new heights with 136,748 exchanges in just 24 hours

The NIO Group has chimed in Chinese New Year by performing an incredible 136,748 battery swaps over a 24-hour period, setting a new record for the brand. Set on February 3, the new six-figure record was set by NIO’s 3106 battery swap stations dotted throughout China, with the car-maker averaging an astonishing 5698 batteries-per-hour.

JB Straubel’s Redwood launches energy business focused on second-life EV batteries

Redwood Materials, the battery recycling firm founded by Tesla co-founder JB Straubel, has launched a new venture called Redwood Energy. The business aims to repurpose used electric vehicle batteries into large-scale, low-cost energy storage systems. That figure is expected to grow to 5 GWh in the coming year.

Despite the minor increase in size, Toyota says there’s been a major increase in range by around 30 per cent from 436km on a charge to an estimated 573km based on the WLTP test cycle. In Europe, a base front-drive model with a 126kW e-motor and a smaller 57.7kWh battery is available but it’s already been ruled out for Australia.
