The IEEE Board of Directors formed an ad hoc committee on climate change in February to coordinate its response to the global threat. Rahman is a professor of electrical and computer engineering at Virginia Tech. The committee includes experts from all six IEEE organizational units and all 10 IEEE regions.

CO 2 emissions from coal fell by 14.6%, the largest annual percentage drop in any fuel’s CO 2 emissions in EIA’s annual CO 2 data series dating back to 1973. The United States now emits less CO 2 from coal than from motor gasoline. Nearly all of the change in CO 2 emissions in 2019 arose in the electric power sector.

Many countries, cities, companies, and individuals have made pledges to reduce emissions, and it is stark reminder that despite all this rhetoric, global fossil CO 2 emissions are more than 5% higher than in 2015, the year of the Paris Agreement.

US electric power sector CO 2 emissions have declined 28% since 2005 because of slower electricity demand growth and changes in the mix of fuels used to generate electricity, according to the US Energy Information Administration (EIA). In 2005, noncarbon sources accounted for 28% of the US electricity mix.
