EEA report: EVs are better for climate and air quality

Battery electric cars emit less greenhouse gases and air pollutants over their entire life cycle than petrol and diesel cars, according to a European Environment Agency (EEA) report. Emissions are usually higher in the production phase of electric cars, but these are more than offset by lower emissions in the use phase over time.

EEA: Fuel efficiency improvements of new cars in Europe slowed in 2016

Official emissions have decreased by a total of more than 22 g CO 2 /km (-16%) since 2010, when an updated monitoring system started under the current EU legislation. While the overall share of diesel vehicle sales fell, absolute sales still increased by more than 192,300 vehicles compared to 2016, according to provisional data.

BNEF forecasts EVs to be 35% of global new car sales by 2040; cost of ownership below conventional-fuel vehicles by 2025

A new study by Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF) forecasts that sales of electric vehicles will hit 41 million by 2040, representing 35% of new light duty vehicle sales worldwide. This would be equivalent to nearly 8% of global electricity demand in 2015. However, that cost comparison is set to change radically in the 2020s.
