The federal subsidy significantly favors larger battery packs to a stronger degree than their potential for additional gasoline savings. Non-domestic charging infrastructure is generally not necessary for operation of PHEVs, and substantial gasoline displacement can be achieved solely with home charging. Peterson and Michalek 2012.

One of the most common complaints we get at GreenCarReports is that we refer to the 2012 Chevrolet Volt as an electric car. Because it has a range-extending gasoline engine, some say, it is only a plug-in hybrid and therefore not worthy to be classed as an electric car.

Relative to the Reference case, the prices of HEVs and PHEV10s (plug-in hybrids with 10-mile electric range) in the High Technology Battery case are 5% below the price in 2035. Prices for battery electric vehicles, even by 2035 with the assumption of technology breakthroughs, are above those for conventional gasoline counterparts.

Miles per gallon gasoline equivalent is a measure of the average distance traveled per unit of energy consumed. Some cars come with a low-power charging cable, commonly referred to as Level 1, as it uses a standard 120-volt outlet to power your car. This is the cheapest way to charge your vehicle, but also the slowest.

Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles refer to vehicles that are equipped with both an internal combustion engine and an electric motor. Gasoline engine allows for road trips. Not enough electric driving range to fully avoid gasoline. Need to regularly plug it in to make sense (but might not need 240-volt equipment).
