This post examines the recent changes in the costs of powering gasoline, diesel, and electric vehicles. The expectation was that the cost of electricity had recently increased much less than the costs of gasoline and diesel. The reason is that, in the United States, oil is used to generate less than 1% of electricity.

Using current technologies, all evaluated biofuel, battery electric, and hydrogen fuel cell vehicle pathways offer significant C2G GHG emissions reduction compared to the current gasoline internal combustion engine vehicle. When fueled by hydrogen produced from landfill gas, the total dropped to 117 g CO 2 e/mi.

Blending ammonia with a small amount of dimethyl ether (DME) gives a liquid fuel with low-temperature combustion properties very similar to gasoline, researchers at KAUST have shown. The development of such fuels could provide an option—in addition to electric cars—for “clean” power for the transportation sector.
