Ground level ozone is a highly reactive gas commonly found in urban and suburban environments, formed when pollutants react in sunlight. To try to address this, an international research team analyzed deaths and environmental measures (weather and air pollutants) in 406 cities in 20 countries, with overlapping periods between 1985 and 2015.

An international team of researchers has used satellite images to map urban growth between 1985 and 2015. Approximately 69% of the newly developed urban areas are in Asia and North America, where urban areas increased by an average of 4,970 ± 319 km 2 yr –1 and 2,358 ± 150 km 2 yr –1 , respectively.
