In light of fuel prices, foreign competition that was smaller and more efficient, and a consumer base that was trending away from land yachts, GM downsized its full-size cars. After its ridiculously trimmed going away party, the downsizing would come for Eldorado the following year.

There was of course another big downsizing coming in just a few years, but nobody was focused on that yet. It was a short era where car ads had to wear disclaimers.

Consumer Reports survey shows high fuel costs cause downsizing, less driving; 73% would consider alt fuel vehicle

In Consumer Reports ’ latest survey , 35% of US respondents report driving fewer miles than they did a year ago. The survey, conducted by the Consumer Reports National Research Center, found that car owners were open to different ways of saving at the pump, from downsizing to looking at hybrids, electric cars, or models with diesel engines.
