MIT team proposes flex-fuel gasoline-alcohol engine PHEV long-haul trucks

Green Car Congress

In a paper being presented at WCX SAE World Congress Experience in Detroit this week, a team from MIT is proposing the use of a flex-fuel gasoline-alcohol engine approach for a series-hybrid powertrain for long-haul Class 8 trucks. In a series hybrid system, the engine can always operate at its optimum speed, maximizing its efficiency.

Hybrid hype: types, tech, and the road ahead

Baua Electric

A hybrid vehicle is powered by at least one electric motor and a gasoline engine, and its system recovers energy through regenerative braking. Instead, the batteries are recharged using a combination of gasoline engine power and energy collected during braking (also known as regenerative braking).

Study Concludes That Smaller Capacity PHEVs Would Be a “Robust” Option for Minimizing Fuel Consumption, Cost and GHG Emissions

Green Car Congress

Best vehicle choice for minimum fuel consumption, cost, or greenhouse gas emissions as a function of distance driven between charges across sensitivity scenarios. Jeremy Michalek For moderate charging intervals of 20-100 miles, PHEVs release fewer GHGs, but HEVs are more cost-effective, the study found. Shiau et al.

Belfer Center discussion paper explores potential for electric vehicles to transform US market

Green Car Congress

A future in which electric cars play a significant role in the nation’s transportation system is not a pipe dream, but it will not happen without higher gasoline prices and a much stronger partnership between private industry, the federal government, and state and local governments. Cost is an important consideration, but not the only one.
