MITEI study finds hydrogen-generated electricity is a cost-competitive candidate for backing up wind and solar

Green Car Congress

A team at MITEI (MIT Energy Initiative) has found that hydrogen-generated electricity can be a cost-competitive option for backing up wind and solar. California draws more than 20% of its electricity from solar and approximately 7% from wind, with more VRE coming online rapidly. —Drake Hernandez.

IISA study proposes using airships for efficient cargo or hydrogen transportation

Green Car Congress

The open-access paper is published in the journal Energy Conversion and Management: X. The jet stream is a core of strong winds that flows from west to east, around 8 to 12 kilometers above the Earth’s surface. This water could be used to increase the weight of the airship and further save energy in its descending trajectory.

New E3SM exascale modeling system for earth simulation released to scientific community

Green Car Congress

The high-resolution E3SM earth system model simulates the strongest storms with surface winds exceeding 150 mph—hurricanes that leave cold wakes that are 2 to 4 degrees Celsius cooler than their surroundings. This conversion to open code will allow collaboration with more groups and centers.

Study finds paved surfaces in Houston worsen air quality

Green Car Congress

This in turn causes a reduction in nighttime winds that would otherwise blow pollutants out to sea. In addition, built structures interfere with local winds and contribute to relatively stagnant afternoon weather conditions. Fei and his colleagues focused on wind patterns, which are driven by temperature contrasts between land and sea.

Biking Through Southern France, and History

But how to build a body of water from scratch? Riquet’s “canal of communication,” as he called the full project, would draw waters flowing south from the Montagne Noire, on France’s central uplands, and north from the foothills of the Pyrenees mountains that border Spain. Photos of guitars hung on the walls.
