Researchers developing free-piston linear generator for exhaust waste heat recovery

Green Car Congress

Researchers in China have developed a novel free-piston linear generator (FPLG) to recover exhaust waste heat efficiently from a vehicle engine. Therefore, it is necessary to recover exhaust energy of vehicle engine, and many strategies and methods have been adopted to reduce the energy waste and improve the fuel utilization efficiency.

Study finds diesel oxidation catalyst eliminates mutagenicity of diesel exhaust in gas phase

Green Car Congress

A team of researchers in Germany has found that the mutagenicity of diesel engine exhaust (DEE) is eliminated in the gas phase by a Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC), but only slightly reduced in the particle phase. Further investigations showed that condensates of the gas phase are likewise mutagenic.

Monash study on solar-driven electrolysis for green hydrogen production cautions on life-cycle emissions and EROI

Green Car Congress

There is no immediate concern for copper resources, but the average ore grade is declining as higher grade deposits become exhausted. The solar-grid scenario assumed that the hydrogen site is connected to the regional grid—the North West Interconnected System (NWIS) of Western Australia. —Palmer et al.

Fraunhofer developing process to ferment steel exhaust gases to fuels and chemicals

Green Car Congress

Fraunhofer researchers in Germany have developed a process for the conversion of CO-rich exhaust gases from steel plants into fuels and specialty chemicals. In addition to the exhaust gases, syngas—similar gas mixtures from home and industrial waste incineration—can also be used for the engineered process.

EV myths busted: Are electric vehicles safer than gas-powered cars?

Drive Electric

Because EVs run on electricity, the vehicle emits no exhaust from a tailpipe and does not contain the typical liquid fuel components in ICEVs. Lithium-ion batteries produce harmful fluoride gas when on fire, burn for longer, and are more difficult to put out than fossil-fueled fires. Learn more about gas vs. electric car fires here.

Environment Canada/MECA team assesses black carbon emissions in GDI engine exhaust; evaluation of prototype gasoline particulate filter

Green Car Congress

Although gasoline direct injection engines (GDI) are a favorable technology for reducing fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, recent studies have shown that GDI vehicles could emit more PM than traditional PFI (gasoline port fuel injection) vehicles as well as heavy-duty diesel trucks equipped with diesel particulate filters.
