They’re a big improvement on the Ioniq 5’s slightly cheap looking and feeling doors. It’s superbly cosseting with barely any wind noise from this streamlined sedan. A Type 2 adapter plugs into the charging port and there’s a powerpoint on this, meaning you can use the car’s battery to power anything up to 3.3kW.

About those radio knobs and the climate control wheels: they are constructed using a cheap-feeling chromed plastic. The power-adjustable and heated exterior mirrors provided excellent rear visibility and were quiet going through the wind. These were the only drawbacks to this fine interior, but certainly not a deal breaker.

Hyundai says the Ioniq 5 N will go from 10 to 80 percent charged in just 18 minutes when plugged into an ultra-fast charger. While there’s wireless phone charging, you must plug-in to use Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Same for the door rests, although the too-thin recycled material door cards feel too cheap for this price car.

Straight up, at $127,800, the GV70 Electrified does not sound cheap, but it is packed with gear and doesn’t charge you umpteen thousands in optional extras. While it’s not cheap, the EV9 comes loaded with equipment and technology to help justify a circa-$100K starting price when it arrives in Australia in the fourth quarter of 2023. Charging is done via a Type 2/CCS combo plug on the right rear of the car. Even on a freeway it’s suitably quiet, hushing not only tyre noise but wind noise.
