Southwest Research Institute has launched a collaborative effort to assist its clients to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and to address governmental mandates for alternative fuel production and tightened emissions standards. Researchers from SRI International (SRI) are developing a methane-and-coal-to-liquids process that consumes negligible amounts of water and does not generate carbon dioxide. In conventional CTL approaches, energy is supplied by burning a portion of the coal feed, which then produces carbon dioxide.

Mercedes-Benz Trucks has approved the use of alternative fuels according to norm prEN 15940 with immediate effect for the latest generations of the OM 470 (displacement 10.7 The compatibility of fuels according to norm prEN 15940 has been proved by numerous tests. The engines are designed as standard for the new fuel type.

The tests for the Alternative Aviation Fuel Experiment (AAFEX) are being run through 3 Feb at NASA’s Dryden Flight Research Center in California, and are measuring the performance and emissions of the two fuels. It is thought that synthetic fuels create fewer particles and other harmful emissions than standard jet fuel.

Although trucks are a major contributor to the growth in transport-fuel consumption and emissions, the sector receives far less attention and policy focus than passenger vehicles, the IEA noted.
