The company plans to do it with a mixture of all-electric vehicles, like the new XC40 Recharge, and plug-in hybrid versions of its SUVs and sedans. The XC90 Recharge is an example of the second group. A plug-in hybrid vehicle is especially good for local electric motoring with the freedom to burn gas on a longer trip.

Kia revealed a new mild hybrid powertrain as well as its new 7-speed DCT at the Geneva Motor Show. Developed by Kia’s European R&D centre, the new hybrid system employs a 48V lead-carbon battery, which powers a small electric motor to increase the engine’s power output and cut exhaust emissions. The rear wheel hosts a minimal 100-watt, chain-driven motor that only reaches speeds of 10 mph (16 km/h), safe for any suburban neighborhood. While the back motor cover is large to hide the chain, it is a bit too big and can scratch the ground when going over a sudden curb. Loud: For such a small motor, it certainly is loud.

The first batteries could power vehicles to “neck-breaking” speeds of up to 14 mph. There were no recharging stations, so batteries needed to be replaced much more often. While on the road, the motor turns this alteration into power. Not too long ago, manufacturers couldn’t afford to offer more than a five-year warranty.

Since the launch on 26 March, Tesla Motors has taken 520 reservations for the Model S, an all-electric family sedan that carries up to seven people and travels up to 300 miles per charge. The Model S can be recharged from any 120V, 208V or 240V outlet or quick-charged from an external direct current supply in 45 minutes.
