Titan LNG, a full service supplier of LNG to the marine and industrial markets in North West Europe, reported that in 2017 around 11% of all new build contracts were LNG powered ships, a trend it expects to continue during 2018. The supplier suggests that LNG adoption as a marine fuel has passed the tipping point.

Moller - Maersk, has invested in Vertoro , a Dutch start-up focused on developing liquid lignin technology which can be used as a marine fuel. US Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell and Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) Director Abigail Hopper released the final plan to guide future energy development for the Nation’s Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) for 2017-2022. The vast majority of US offshore oil production occurs in the Gulf of Mexico.

The UK government’s Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) approved the field development plan put forward by Statoil and its co-venturers for the Mariner heavy oil field. Location of the Mariner field. Statoil expects to start production from Mariner in 2017, and the field is expected to produce for 30 years.

Researchers from the GEOMAR Helmholtz Center for Ocean Research Kiel have found that considerable quantities of the greenhouse gas methane escape uncontrolled into the water from abandoned oil and gas wells in the North Sea. The most important factor was indeed the distance of the wells from the gas pockets.

The US Department of the Interior will offer more than 21 million acres offshore Texas for oil and gas exploration and development in a lease sale that will include all available unleased areas in the Western Gulf of Mexico Planning Area.
