In 2007, four-cylinder models represented 23% of Chevrolet retail sales in the US— less than either V-6 or V-8 equipped models. Shanghai GM has outlined the next phase of its “Drive to Green” product strategy—launched in 2008 ( earlier post )—for 2011-2015. The joint venture between GM and SAIC intends to reduce fuel consumption and CO 2 emissions by 15% while improving performance 14% by 2015. Several targets announced in 2008 have already been achieved.

A new Carnegie Mellon University study released at the Washington Auto Show finds that for passenger cars, aadvanced vehicles with higher fuel economy—i.e, port fuel injected (PFI) gasoline—during periods of higher fuel costs. But that’s only one element of the equation.

In addition to holding their value better than gasoline-powered vehicles, diesels incur lower fuel costs—12-27% less for passenger cars and SUVs and 4-8% less for medium-duty pickups over three- and five-year periods.
