Seven companies from the GET H2 initiative in Europe want to build a cross-border pipeline for green hydrogen. By using green hydrogen in refineries, in steel production and for other industrial uses, the overall project should be able to avoid CO 2 emissions of up to 16 million tonnes by 2030.

The vision document describes a self-sustaining market in 2030 for fuel cell electric vehicles and renewably hydrogen, and the strategic priorities necessary for realizing it. The CaFCP document envisions 1,000 hydrogen stations enabling upwards of 1,000,000 fuel electric vehicles on California roads in 2030.

Navigant suggests that, since the automakers have already designed the vehicles that they will be selling in 2018, they will become more vocal in 2014 to push for changes; the firm expects the dispute to escalate, perhaps resulting in legal action. In October, California passed legislation committing to build 100 hydrogen stations by 2024.

The actual bursting pressure is much higher still and far exceeds the legal requirements. Three electrolyzers powered primarily by surplus green electricity split water into oxygen and hydrogen. In the subsequent methanation process, the hydrogen reacts with CO₂. The result is synthetic methane: Audi e-gas.
