Icelandic power generator HS Orka and Hydrogen Ventures Limited (H2V) will partner to develop a production plant for green methanol using green hydrogen to power the marine sector, as well as domestic and commercial vehicles such as cars, vans and lorries. The total cost of Phase One is anticipated to be €100 million.

The lights are even on some recycling bins in Reykjavík, the capital: “Keep Iceland Clean.” In the past decade or so, an aurora borealis industrial complex has boomed in Iceland. That doesn’t mean much for Iceland. Sometimes, the lights are there.

The Swiss company Climeworks is building the world’s largest direct air capture (DAC) and storage facility for converting atmospheric CO 2 to rock in Iceland. Climeworks’ new facility in Iceland transports the CO 2 filtered out of the air below the Earth’s surface, where natural processes then mineralize it.

For the last 18 months, a fleet of 6 methanol-fueled versions of the Geely Emgrand 7 cars have been in Iceland. Among drivers testing the vehicles were CRI staff and members of the Icelandic Automobile Association as well as several local service providers in the auto industry. Geely is a shareholder ($45.5-million Earlier post.).

A study by three French institutes—Ifremer, the University of Bordeaux and the IRD (a public research institution)—has found that the surface water of the Atlantic Ocean is twice as polluted by cellulose fibers as it is by microplastics. This unique set of data casts doubt then over the internal dynamics of the gyre.
