Honda- the first car maker to launch a hybrid car-is celebrating the landmark figure of 800,000 petrol-electric cars sales since its Insight model hit the road in November 1999.

Toyota will be boosted by $73million in federal and state taxpayer funded assistance in Australia – despite the fact that its hybrid car sales are underperforming. The money will go towards the production of more than 100,000 hybrid and fuel efficient petrol engines from the company’s Altona plant in Victoria.

The world’s first production hybrid electric vehicle to be powered by a liquefied petroleum injected (LPI) engine has proven an instant sales success for its manufacturer. The LPI Hybrid qualifies as a Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle and has a fuel economy rating of 17.8km/l (42mpg) - the petrol equivalent fuel economy is 51mpg.

Currently there are just over 2,100 hybrid and 2,600 compressed natural gas cars in the region according to a report in the Straits Times - this is less than one per cent of the total car population of around 550,500.

South Korea’s largest car manufacturer, Hyundai, has now started to take pre-orders for its first hybrid vehicle for commercial sale. The Elantra LPI Hybrid Electric Vehicle will accept pre-orders until July 7 before the car is officially launched to the Korean domestic market.

This isnt an either-or equation — GM needs to develop more fuel efficient cars alongside the Volt, and its stupid to expect the Volt to be a money-maker out of the gate. doesnt matter because when the average electric car stops, it stops for a long while.
