Researchers at Harvard have demonstrated a metal-free organic–inorganic aqueous flow battery—a quinone–bromide flow battery (QBFB)—as an example of a class of energy storage materials that exploits the favorable chemical and electrochemical properties of a family of molecules known as quinones.

A team of engineers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute has demonstrated how they could—by using aqueous electrolytes instead of the typical organic electrolytes—assemble a substantially safer, cost-efficient battery that still performs well. A paper on their work is published in the journal Energy Storage Materials.
