The system is the first to achieve an unprecedented level of computing performance known as exascale, a threshold of a quintillion calculations per second.
The rebooted DeLorean Motor Company has revealed its new electric sports car, the Alpha5. And while it carries on the name and gullwing layout of the original DMC-12 that took Marty McFly Back to the Future, it travels to a different era entirely. The Alpha5 will accelerate to 155 mph, according to the company, and it will sprint to 60 mph in 3.0.

When we think of bipedal humanoid robots, we tend to think of robots that aren’t just human-shaped, but also human-sized. There are exceptions, of course—among them, a subcategory of smaller humanoids that includes research and hobby humanoids that aren’t really intended to do anything practical. But at the In International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA) last week, roboticists from Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) are asked an interesting question : What happens if you try to scale
Following the market launch of the eActros for heavy-duty distribution transport in 2021, Mercedes-Benz Trucks is systematically pressing ahead with the introduction of additional battery-electric models for this and coming years. For the important long-haul segment, the eActros LongHaul, with a range of around 500 kilometers (311 miles) on one battery charge, is scheduled to be ready for series production in 2024.
As our own Jennifer Sensiba recently pointed out, “There Ain’t No Such Thing As A Free Lunch” is an established economic principle— but it’s also a pretty well established principle in physics, too. Basically, you can’t get something for nothing, and there’s no such thing as free lunch energy. Or … is there?
NVIDIA announced that a range of the world’s leading computer makers are adopting the new NVIDIA Grace superchips to create the next generation of servers turbocharging AI and HPC workloads for the exascale era. Atos, Dell Technologies, GIGABYTE, HPE, Inspur, Lenovo and Supermicro are planning to deploy servers built with the NVIDIA Grace CPU Superchip and NVIDIA Grace Hopper Superchip.
SpaceX workers have been spotted repairing the company’s newest Starship prototype in the days after the rocket’s first partial test. Starship S24 was transported to SpaceX’s Starbase, Texas orbital launch site (OLS) on May 26th after about two and a half months of assembly, marking the first time SpaceX transported a new Starship prototype to a test stand since August 2021.
Nippon Shokubai and Arkema are joining forces to launch feasibility studies and establish a joint venture for the construction of an industrial plant for the production of LiFSI (Lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide) ultrapure electrolyte salt, a key component of battery cells for electric mobility. Ultrapure and high performance LiFSI electrolyte salts, a key component of car battery cells, will speed up the development of new electrolyte formulations for the next generations of batteries, includin
New research finds that timing matters for standards and subsidies. Light bulbs were back in the news last month, with the Department of Energy announcing new tighter U.S. rules for … Continue Reading Did CFL Subsidies Crowd Out LED Purchases?
The technology group Wärtsilä, and its collaborators WEC Energy Group, (WEC), the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and Burns & McDonnell (B&McD), have been contracted to carry out hydrogen fuel testing at the A.J. Mihm power plant in Michigan. The project supports WEC’s ambition to reduce the CO 2 emissions from its electric generating fleet by 60% by the end of 2025, and by 80% by the end of 2030 from 2005 levels, and to be net carbon-neutral by 2050.
Solar electric vehicle startup Sono Motors has announced a purchase contract with European refrigerated trailer expert CHEREAU to codevelop a solar-powered version for fleet trucks and trailers. Together, the companies hope to leverage Sono’s solar technology to reduce both fuel costs and CO2 emissions. The new solar-powered refrigerated vehicle is expected to debut at IAA Transportation 2022 in September. more….
Battery “gigafactories” are under construction all over the world—and none too soon. As EV sales grow, it is critical to establish local battery production and shorten supply chains. However, state-of-the-art cell packaging and chemistries are evolving quickly these days. How will cell manufacturers future-proof their cell production facilities? How flexible will these new plants be to modify formats and chemistries?
Total control of power usage: from solar to EV and back to the house. Bidirectional charging promises to completely transform the vehicle ownership experience. Once an EV can double as a stationary storage device, it will take its place as part of an energy ecosystem that includes rooftop solar and energy management—and could even become a source of revenue for owners and a valuable grid-balancing resource for utilities.
Second only to power output, efficiency is one of the most fudgeable ratings that applies to traction motors for EVs (right up there with capacity and cycle life claims for Li-ion batteries…). For common 3-phase industrial AC motors, most of the specmanship shenanigans have been dealt with by NEMA (National Electrical Manufacturers Association), a voluntary industry organization that outlines standards for everything from the size and design of motors to electrical enclosures and even power plug
A Ford F-150 Lightning owner and veteran EV driver has provided some useful real-world data on the all-electric pickup truck and its towing capabilities. As it turned out, F-150 Lightning owners may need to plan out their routes very well if they wish to tow with their vehicles over long distances. . The F-150 Lightning owner towed a 23-foot Airstream trailer for about 30 miles during his test.

Electrifying commercial vehicles is a critical part of reducing emissions, so it’s frustrating that the pace of fleet electrification has been so slow. Viable commercial EVs have been around for years, but fleet operators insisted on conducting years-long pilots to prove their reliability. Now that phase is over, and companies are starting to place substantial orders, but they’re running into another hurdle—charging infrastructure needs to be built out, and managing it is a complex affair.
Tesla China is planning to keep its workers at Gigafactory Shanghai isolated, even as authorities ease movement restrictions for residents in low-risk parts of the city. Tesla Giga Shanghai’s workers would be staying in a closed-loop system until June 10, 2022. Despite the city’s stringent Covid lockdowns, Tesla has been able to resume partial vehicle production at Giga Shanghai, which halted operations for about three weeks from late March to April.

Finally make the switch to electric mowing with the latest that’s on sale for a new all-time low right now. It delivers “gas-like power” according to WORX and even features built-in LED headlights so you can cut the yard when it’s dark outside. Another thing that makes it so you can mow when it’s darker out is the fact that electric mowers are much quieter than gas alternatives.
