Rhodium Group estimates US GHG fell 2.1% in 2019, driven by coal decline

Green Car Congress

This decline was due almost entirely to a drop in coal consumption. Coal-fired power generation fell by a record 18% year-on-year to its lowest level since 1975. An increase in natural gas generation offset some of the climate gains from this coal decline, but overall power sector emissions still decreased by almost 10%.

Study finds steelmaking by electric arc furnace in US produces up to 75% less carbon emissions

Green Car Congress

Steel produced by electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmakers in the US has a carbon intensity that is approximately 75% lower than traditional blast furnace steelmakers. Using an established, proven steelmaking process, EAF producers are making steel at far lower carbon-intensity levels than traditional steelmakers around the globe.

Report finds says “negative emissions technologies” need to play a large role in mitigating climate change

Green Car Congress

To achieve goals for climate and economic growth, “negative emissions technologies” (NETs) that remove and sequester carbon dioxide from the air will need to play a significant role in mitigating climate change, according to a new report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.

Black carbon linked to increased cardiovascular risk; exacerbated by co-exposure to motor vehicle emissions

Green Car Congress

Black carbon (BC) from incomplete biomass and fossil fuel combustion is the most strongly light-absorbing component of particulate matter (PM) air pollution and a major climate-forcing emission. Air pollution mitigation efforts focusing on reducing combustion pollution are likely to have major benefits for climate and human health.

Volvo Cars first car maker to join SteelZero initiative in support of fossil-free steel ambitions

Green Car Congress

Volvo Cars is the first car maker to sign up to the SteelZero initiative , which aims to increase demand for fossil-free steel and accelerate a transition to carbon neutrality in the global steel industry. Low embodied carbon steel, with a defined specific emissions intensity which takes into account the proportion of end of life scrap.

Why Aren’t Energy Flows Diagrams Used More To Inform Decarbonization?

CleanTechnica EVs

The primary energy fallacy is the assumption that all of the energy in all of the oil, gas and coal we burn today must be replaced. We don't need to replace it, we need to replace the unwasted energy services.
