The lithium-ion battery isn’t going anywhere soon. Stanley Whittingham , the Nobel laureate who created the first rechargeable lithium-ion battery some 50 years ago, told attendees of the SLAC-Stanford Battery Research Center Launch Symposium on Thursday. That’s what M. We’ve got to find new manufacturing technologies.”

Battery electric trucks should be the baseline for hydrogen fuel cells electric vehicle (HFCEV) comparisons, rather than any internal combustion engine alternative. Hydrogen is a regional solution, cheap hydrogen even more so. Fill times are moving targets for both fuel cell and battery electric vehicles.

Rumor has it that the vehicle will play host to a battery pack sized just shy of 80 kWh and that the engineering team is hoping to create a rival of the all-electric 718 Porsche has been developing. Battery packs may be good at keeping a vehicle’s center of gravity low. Alpine plans to start with smaller vehicles, which is on brand.

Researchers in the Cockrell School of Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin have developed a new family of anode materials that can double the charge capacity of lithium-ion battery anodes. The results suggest that a smaller, lighter rechargeable battery could be made with the new anode in the future. —Kreder et al.
