Alaska’s oceans are becoming increasingly acidic, which could damage Alaska’s king crab and salmon fisheries, according to new findings by a University of Alaska Fairbanks scientist. They show that ocean acidification is likely more severe and is happening more rapidly in Alaska than in tropical waters.

Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), recently introduced legislation authorizing a study to determine the feasibility of building a deep water port in the Arctic. The two-year study would seek to determine what strategic capabilities a deep water port could provide as well as the best location to site such a facility.

Obama designated the vast majority of US waters in the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas as indefinitely off limits to offshore oil and gas leasing. It’s uncharted waters.”.

Shell has proposed drilling up to six wells in the Chukchi Sea during the next two summer open water seasons within the Burger Prospect, located about 70 miles off the coast in approximately 140 feet of water. BSEE is planning an additional exercise with Shell and federal, state and local representatives in spring 2012.
