Continental Structural Plastics perfects carbon fiber RTM process, launches production programs

Continental Structural Plastics (CSP) has fine-tuned its carbon fiber RTM (resin transfer molding) (CF-RTM) process to the point that a premium automaker will be using the technology for closures on future vehicle platforms. We have been targeting a 3-minute cycle time using 100 percent recycled carbon fiber.

Report: Nippon Steel to bring lighter, stronger automotive steel sheet to market in 2020

According to the report, the company will start marketing the product around 2020. Although the material is not as light as aluminum alloy or carbon fiber reinforced plastic, its price is only a third to half that of aluminum and about 1/20 that of CFRP.

DOE awards $54M to 13 projects for transformational manufacturing technologies and materials; top two awards go to carbon fiber materials and electrodes for next-gen batteries
