This fuel mixture will reduce carbon emissions by more than 75% compared to the retiring coal-fired technology. The renewed generation facility will be owned by IPA and operated by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP). The ACES project will use renewable power to produce hydrogen through electrolysis.

The projects, administered by DOE’s Vehicle Technologies Office (VTO) and Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office (HFTO), will accelerate the deployment of medium- and heavy-duty EV charging and refueling infrastructure to reduce emissions from freight corridors and the depots, ports, and other facilities those corridors service.

The rule requires container, passenger and refrigerated cargo ships to reduce emissions while docked at California’s busiest ports, including Los Angeles, Long Beach, Oakland, Hueneme, San Francisco and San Diego. Power reduction requirements have been phased in over time and increased from 70% to 80% in 2020.
