The State of Maryland followed in the footsteps of California today by banning all new gas vehicle sales by the model year 2035. Car exhaust is the largest source of greenhouse gas in the State of Maryland. “ It is based on California’s economy, California’s transportation needs, and California’s electrical grid.”

Subaru brought its gull-wing Hybrid Tourer Concept, first introduced at the Tokyo Motor Show last year ( earlier post ) to the North American International Auto Show in Detroit to highlight its announcement that it will develop a gas/electric hybrid system based on the boxer engine for launch in 2012.

In a paper being presented at WCX SAE World Congress Experience in Detroit this week, a team from MIT is proposing the use of a flex-fuel gasoline-alcohol engine approach for a series-hybrid powertrain for long-haul Class 8 trucks. We think that the way to enable the use of electricity in these vehicles is with a plug-in hybrid.
