A study by Jonn Axsen and Ken Kurani from the Institute of Transportation Studies, UC Davis, estimates electricity and gasoline use under three recharging scenarios. the electric range capability—of the PHEV. Drivers are assumed to immediately plug-in and recharge whenever they are parked within 25 ft of an electrical outlet.

The US Department of Transportation (DOT) is awarding $100 million in Economic Recovery Act funding to 43 transit agencies for projects to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions from both vehicles and facilities. The Federal Transit Administration reviewed more than $2 billion in applications for these funds.

The impact from plug-in electric vehicles on the grid could be very substantial.
