The glass transition temperature is the temperature region in which a polymer transitions from a hard, glassy material to a soft, rubbery material. In other words, when the polymer is cooled below the glass transition temperature, it becomes hard and brittle. Their production and disposal is therefore unsustainable in the long term.

At the DOD Corrosion Conference 2011, La Quinta, California this week, NIST researchers presented new experimental evidence that bacteria that feed on ethanol and produce acid boosted fatigue crack growth rates by at least 25 times the levels occurring in air alone. Ethanol also can be used as fuel by itself in modified engines.
