Universal Hydrogen has flown a 40-passenger regional airliner using hydrogen fuel cell propulsion. In this first test flight, one of the airplane’s turbine engines was replaced with Universal Hydrogen’s fuel cell-electric, megawatt-class powertrain. The other remained a conventional engine for safety of flight.

SK Corp, the holding company of SK Group, has made a strategic investment in Monolith , a US company that has developed a plasma-based process to produce “cyan” hydrogen—between green (via electrolysis using renewable energy) and blue (conversion of methane accompanied by CO 2 capture and storage). Yanmar Power Technology, a subsidiary of Yanmar Holdings, is commercializing a 300 kW maritime hydrogen fuel cell system. The company plans to propose the installation of this system into various ships, including passenger ships, work ships, and cargo ships operating in coastal areas where hydrogen refueling is relatively accessible.

Iberdrola Australia and Australia-based hydrogen developer ABEL Energy will build a green hydrogen and green methanol production plant at Bell Bay in northern Tasmania (Australia). Green hydrogen from the plant will be available for domestic customers. Source: ABEL Energy.

Airbus is developing a hydrogen-powered fuel cell engine. Airbus will start ground and flight testing this fuel cell engine architecture onboard its ZEROe demonstrator aircraft towards the middle of the decade. There are two ways hydrogen can be used as a power source for aircraft propulsion.

The EU should promote the use of green hydrogen and ammonia by ships as part of its upcoming maritime fuel law, major shipping industry players and environmentalists have told the European Commission. The FuelEU Maritime initiative will require ships carrying EU trade to progressively switch to sustainable alternative fuels.

World’s green hydrogen leaders unite to drive 50-fold scale-up in six years. The new “Green Hydrogen Catapult” initiative will see green hydrogen industry leaders target the deployment of 25 gigawatts through 2026 of renewables-based hydrogen production, with a view to halve the current cost of hydrogen to below US$2 per kilogram.
