Researchers use melamine to create effective, low-cost carbon capture; potential tailpipe application

Green Car Congress

The new material is simple to make, requiring primarily off-the-shelf melamine powder—which today costs about $40 per ton—along with formaldehyde and cyanuric acid, a chemical that, among other uses, is added with chlorine to swimming pools. The low cost of porous melamine means that the material could be deployed widely.

Energy Vault to provide 1.6 GWh of gravity energy storage to support DG Fuels SAF projects

Green Car Congress

Energy Vault’s advanced gravity energy storage solutions are based on the proven physics and mechanical engineering fundamentals of pumped hydroelectric energy storage, but replace water with custom-made composite blocks, or “mobile masses”, which do not lose storage capacity over time.

DOE awarding about $16M to four projects for advanced gasification systems; focus on coal

Green Car Congress

Awardees will receive approximately $16 million to advance the gasification process, which converts carbon-based materials such as coal into syngas for use as power, chemicals, hydrogen, and transportation fuels. Advanced Gasifier and Water-Gas Shift Technologies for Low-Cost Coal Conversion to High-Hydrogen Syngas.

EIA: US electricity generation from coal and natural gas both increased with summer heat

Green Car Congress

In August 2012, coal produced 39% of US electricity, up from a low of 32% in April 2012, when the natural gas share of generation equaled that of coal. The August coal share of generation is still notably lower than the 50% annual average over the 1990-2010 period. Other plants use PRB coal transported by rail.

8 Rivers announces 8RH2 CO2 Convective Reformer for ultra-low carbon hydrogen production from natural gas

Green Car Congress

The only by-products are liquid water and a stream of high-purity, pipeline-ready CO 2. The ultra-low carbon hydrogen then can be turned into ultra-low carbon ammonia, which in turn can be used for decarbonized fertilizer, zero-carbon maritime fuels, and as a zero-carbon feedstock fuel to replace coal in existing power infrastructure.
