While rummaging through my bolts last night, I discovered that I had forgot to install the flywheel bolt plate and had just put the bolts right into the flywheel. While this might not have been fatal, I'm really happy that I was able to take out the bolts (rather hard with red loctite) and install the proper plate.

They provided an upgrade kit with lock washers and loctite to remedy the problem. I had already installed the motor in the 914 and chose to not perform the upgrade due to the hassle of removing the motor. Here are the pieces for the upgrade kit above one of the motor bolts. Here's the back end of the transmission/motor.

Tonight's project was installing the potbox that I assembled a few days ago. The bottom two are installed with rivnuts so we don't see them. I'll start the installation tomorrow after finishing my third week of commuting to work. EVParts.com sells it as a DC-DC converter for many of their electric vehicle conversion kits. EV conversion kits have you make a three-prong plug with the hot and neutral tied to the main battery pack to supply this converter.

Next up is installing the auxiliary battery. Also, the instructions for the DC kit may not apply to the AC kit. Here's where the real fun begins since there are no wiring diagrams from Electro Automotive for the AC kit yet! I was somewhat blindly following the instructions up to this point so I'm guessing there's a bug.

Again, I don't have the clutch friction disk installed, so the only thing that the flywheel is touching is the input shaft inside the pilot bearing. I wish all the other 914 AC kit owners luck. I wish Ross the best in getting the second 914 AC kit on the road! Here's my test setup again. Here's the alternate transmission.

A modification of the prior strap is basically what is suggested in the DC kit instructions. It turns out that the only copper interconnect that fit right out of the kit bag was the completely flat bar with two holes. I found a funny shaped link in the kit, but could simply not get it to fit anywhere in the system. Goodnight.

The dangling white and green wire go to the ammeter shunt and the dangling black wire I think is not used in the AC kit. We need this here to install the charger mount next. Trust the instructions when they say that installing the upper hose clamp is easier. Next up: Installing the mount for the charger.

One of the other 914 kit converters questioned why the accessory battery couldn't stay in the original tray, but I decided to remove it anyway and have the accessory battery up in the front trunk near the DC/DC converter. Next up: installing two-wire cable for the backup switch and potbox to keep things looking nice.

You can see the pins that were previously installed by Electro Auto. The original kit doesn't use the red light and the green light is simply grounded. To open up this connector, I used an icepick to lightly bend aside the two small black holding tabs on either end. It was then relatively easy to pop off the red cover.

In addition, ElectroAuto hasn't sent any hardware (specifically the rivnuts) so I can install many of these pieces. I've contacted Randy Pollock, the first person to order a 914 AC kit and he and I are working to figure this out.

I received an updated wiring diagram for the AC kit from ElectroAuto, and, much to my disappointment, many of the connections went between the battery caps. Here's the middle battery box with the copper bars and welding cable installed. And finally, the rear battery box with all copper bars and cables installed except the fusible link.

Today, I installed the last kit piece that I have from Electro Automotive: the motor controller wiring harness. This made the installation much easier. The next major step is installing the battery racks which still need to arrive from ElectroAuto, so I have no idea when they will be here.

For some reason, I had an extra cap-plug left over from the kit, so I used it to protect the cable from the sharp metal edges. I'd really like to get the hair dryers installed soon so I can drive in the colder weather. The cable now runs neatly behind the seats and into the central armrest. Cheers and good night.
