A European-based Vauxhall Vivaro van retrofitted with Protean Electric’s electric wheel motors ( earlier post )applied in a through-the-road plug-in hybrid system (TTRH) has shown a more than three-fold improvement in fuel economy in hybrid mode over a conventional Vivaro on the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC).

Accumulated fuel consumption over Cenex drive cycle for standard London taxi (TX2) and DuoDrive-equipped TX2 (blue line). In recent tests, the DuoDrive taxi demonstrated a 56% improvement in fuel economy compared to a standard London Taxi (TX2), and simulations predict that an improvement of 100% is possible with further optimization.

GKN Land Systems is ramping up production of its Gyrodrive electric flywheel hybrid technology for buses following successful trials in London and the start of UK production. Gyrodrive uses a high-speed composite flywheel paired with an innovative GKN EVO electric motor to regenerate the energy normally lost during braking.

The HybriDrive series hybrid electric system consists of a diesel-powered generator, an electric motor, and an energy storage system. Buses equipped with HybriDrive series have travelled more than 300 million miles, prevented more than 280,000 tons of CO 2 emissions and have saved more than 25 million gallons of diesel fuel.
