The government has revealed the first six electric vehicles eligible for its new Electric Car Grant (ECG). Citroen UK managing director Greg Taylor commented: “We welcome the support of the Electric Car Grant and are delighted to be the first brand to have our electric range approved. Claimed MPG of 60.

After completion of five-cycle testing, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has rated the battery-electric Nissan LEAF with an mpg-equivalent rating of 106 city, 92 highway for a combined 99 mpge. Projected annual electric cost is $561. The new fuel economy label also notes consumption of 34 kWh per 100 miles.

Coal still supplies more power in the US than anything else, with natural gas next. However, building more coal and gas power plants to make miles for transport is counter-productive if the game plan is to reduce carbon output. At that rate, the cost to operate an electric vehicle is 2 cents per mile. Unfortunately, they don’t.

China’s State Council has published a plan to develop the domestic energy-saving and new energy vehicle industry, which includes battery-electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid vehicles and fuel cell vehicles. China has made big progress in electric car technologies but still lags behind other countries in certain areas, said the report.
