MIT team engineers yeast to be more tolerant to toxic byproducts, boosting biofuels production; “tolerance module”

To try to expand biofuels’ potential impact, a team of MIT engineers has now found a way to expand the use of a wider range of nonfood feedstocks to produce such fuels. The MIT researchers developed a way to circumvent that toxicity, making it feasible to use those sources, which are much more plentiful, to produce biofuels.

MIT team engineers yeast to boost lipid production for biofuels

MIT engineers have genetically engineered strains of the oleaginous yeast Yarrowia lipolytica to boost the production of lipids by about 25% compared to previously engineered yeast strains. Owing to the depletion of fossil fuels, plant-oil- and animal-fat-derived lipids are being developed as renewable feedstocks for biodiesel production.

MIT study concludes V2G-enabled electric commercial trucks could offer lower total operating cost than conventional diesel fleet

A new study by researchers at MIT’s Center for Transportation and Logistics (CTL), concludes that electric commercial vehicles can cost 9 to 12% less to operate than trucks powered by diesel engines when used to make deliveries on an everyday basis in big cities and when V2G (vehicle-to-grid) revenue is incorporated.

ExxonMobil and UW Madison extend research collaboration on conversion of biomass to transportation fuels
