To reduce the number of accidents in the global oil and gas industry caused by damaged pipelines, University of Houston researchers are developing an autonomous robot to identify potential pipeline leaks and structural failures during subsea inspections. When larger spills happen, pipelines are often the culprit.

Chevron’s Brazilian subsidiary and Petrobras have started crude oil production from Papa-Terra’s floating production, storage and offloading vessel (FPSO) offshore Brazil. Papa-Terra has installed capacity to produce 140,000 barrels of heavy crude per day; the project is estimated to recover 380 million barrels of oil.

Chevron, ConocoPhillips, ExxonMobil and Shell plan to build and deploy a rapid response system that will be available to capture and contain oil in the event of a potential future underwater well blowout in the deepwater Gulf of Mexico. The companies have committed $1 billion to fund the initial costs of the system.

Thirteen production wells will be connected to the P-61, and the well currently in operation is the PPT-16. Shuttle tankers transport the oil from the field and surplus gas not consumed on the platforms is injected into a nearby reservoir. Papa Terra field is operated by Petrobras (62.5%) in partnership with Chevron (37.5%).
